Ever since getting my Kindle in the spring of last year, I don’t think I’ve read one novel in an analog format. But I’ll be kicking it old school again soon, as John Lange’s* Grave Descend arrived in yesterday’s post.

While I love the ease, speed, and portability of ebooks, I’ll always buy physical copies of anything Hard Case Crime publishes. First, they put out the best covers in the business and they need to be seen to be truly appreciated. Second, it just feels wrong and a betrayal of history to have old, pulpy crime thrillers reduced to ones and zeroes.

Adding Monsters to Thrift Store Paintings

Have you ever been to a thrift store (think Goodwill or Salvation Army) and noticed that they usually carry a small selection of landscape paintings? Artists Chris McMahon and Thryza Segal decided to inject a little fun into these discarded works and give them a second life by adding monsters to the scenic landscapes. The trick is to match the paint originally used (e.g., acrylic or oil) and try to blend the monsters into the original scene as if they were always there.

I love this.

Among my doable resolutions this year is to financially support the podcasts that give me many hours of free entertainment. Well, I finally started the process and bought the Kindle version of The Comedy Film Nerds Guide To Movies. For a limited time it’s heavily discounted at a measly $2. If you’re a film buff and a comedy fan, I think you should buy it, too.

(Yeah, $2 isn’t much, which is why I also plan on buying a signed, physical copy directly from them at some point.)
